The decision by Democratic Party strategists to heavily target freshman Republican Rep. Tim Walberg as too conservative for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District has its roots in the 2006 campaign that sent Walberg to Congress. Walberg won that year’s Republican nomination in an August primary by defeating one-term GOP moderate incumbent Joe Schwarz after an ideologically charged campaign — one in which the political action committee for the Club for Growth, a conservative organization that endorsed Walberg, waged a vigorous independent expenditure campaign against Schwarz.
