The Boston Herald On John McCain: "It's Straight Talk That Wins Voters"

"Voters are looking for a president who can inspire and lead, who can reach across the aisle and get things done. GOP voters and office holders are seeing in McCain the only candidate who could win the White House - and they're sticking with him. Count us there too." -- The Boston Herald
"It's Straight Talk That Wins Voters"

Florida's Republican voters sent that message loud and clear this week, allowing Sen. John McCain's Straight Talk Express to go full steam ahead into Super Duper Tuesday - when Massachusetts votes along with nearly half of the nation.
Even before the Christmas stockings were hung last month, this newspaper's reporters and editors sat around the conference table with McCain, throwing issue after issue at him. And whether it was about the conduct of the war in Iraq or immigration policy or taxes, we liked what we heard.
But more than that we could trust what we heard. John McCain has never been the kind of politician - the kind of leader - who held his finger to the wind to divine where he should be on any given issue. You can like his immigration policy or not - and, yes, we actually like it - it wasn't going to change as this season wore on. And so he won this paper's endorsement.
Surely Florida's Republican voters - and in that state's primary only registered Republicans could cast a ballot in that race - were comfortable with McCain's vast experience in foreign affairs and national security. But exit polls showed that most GOP voters for whom the economy was a primary concern also opted for McCain over former Gov. Mitt Romney. Experience and trustworthiness count there too.
Yesterday former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani ended his own campaign for the presidency and endorsed McCain, and that seemed altogether right. The two men shared a mutual respect and both worked hard to keep their campaigns positive and issue-oriented. At the end of the day that is what voters demand.
Voters are looking for a president who can inspire and lead, who can reach across the aisle and get things done. GOP voters and office holders are seeing in McCain the only candidate who could win the White House - and they're sticking with him. Count us there too.
