Fred Thompson quits presidential race

NAPLES, Fla. - Republican Fred Thompson, the actor-politician who attracted more attention as a potential presidential candidate than as a real one, quit the race for the White House on Tuesday after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states.

Thompson Drops Out of Presidential Race

Actor and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson on Tuesday announced that he was dropping his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States,” Thompson said in a written statement. A spokesman said Thompson is in Nashville today, visiting his mother in the hospital, and had no public events scheduled.
