Huckabee Blames Thompson for His Second Place Showing as GOP Candidate Race Against McCain

One day after a disappointing second place finish in South Carolina, Mike Huckabee got back in the saddle Sunday to party at the ranch of action movie icon Chuck Norris, and repeated a claim by his campaign chairman that Fred Thompson was his biggest barrier to defeating John McCain in the Palmetto State.

Mike Huckabee: South Carolina Needs Aggressive Broad Based Economic Renewal

Former AR Governor Has Five-Point Plan to Stimulate Economy for Working Families

Greenville, SC – The latest unemployment news from South Carolina shows how important “aggressive action is to a broad-based economic renewal,” Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee said today.

“President Bush’s plan will help, and it’s an important step. But South Carolina and the rest of the nation need some bigger changes if we are to reverse the trends of the last few years,” Governor Huckabee said today while campaigning through South Carolina in advance of tomorrow’s Republican presidential primary.

Last Monday, Governor Huckabee released his own five-point "Fair Deal" stimulus package aimed at creating jobs: 1) More income, better jobs, more secure home ownership for middle-class families, 2) work with the Federal Reserve for a pro-growth, low-inflation economy, 3) increase defense spending to 6 percent of Gross Domestic Product in response to real threats to America’s security, 4) invest in energy independence and 5) move toward a Fair Tax that eliminates the current distorted tax code.

The South Carolina unemployment rate jumped to 6.6 percent in December, up from 5.9 percent the previous month, according to the state Employment Security Commission. It was the largest one-month increase since at least 1990, state officials said.

One major problem, Huckabee said, is the current unfair tax code. “If we replace the IRS with the Fair Tax, we lift the burden off of the small- and medium-sized businesses who create most of the jobs. Then the only people who we then have to feel sorry for are the legions of Washington lobbyists who manipulate the current complicated code for somebody else,” Huckabee said.

Huckabee Campaign Manager Chip Saltsman Comments On Recent Remarks By Gov. Huckabee

Huckabee's in some hot water with some due his comments regarding amending the Constitution. We'll try to grab exactly what he said and post it. Here's the campaign's response:

Columbia, SC – Huckabee for President Campaign Manager Chip Saltsman issued the following statement regarding a comment made by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee on television this morning: "The Constitution has been amended 27 times in 221 years. Included in those amendments are free speech, freedom of religion, emancipation of the slaves, and women's right to vote. Gov Huckabee supports amendments for marriage and human life. His comments today were directed toward his support for those two important amendments."

Ron Paul: Fact Check: Huckabee Flip-Flops, Misleads on Immigration

Despite what pro-Mike Huckabee push polls may claim, Huckabee does not have a conservative record on key issues when compared to Congressman Ron Paul.

Birthright Citizenship

Huckabee flip-flopped on ending birthright citizenship. (source: http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080109/ NATION/992492919/1028/ELECTION)

Ron Paul has not wavered in his support of ending birthright citizenship for illegal aliens. (source: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/border-security-and-immigration- reform/)

Scholarships for Illegal Immigrants

Mike Huckabee supported taxpayer-funded scholarships for illegal aliens and defended that position on the campaign trail this summer. Ron Paul has always opposed welfare for illegals while in Congress (source: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/articles/131/amnesty-and-the-welfare- state/)

Minuteman Endorsement

Huckabee gives the impression that he has the Minuteman group endorsement, when in fact the Minuteman official to support Huckabee has been roundly criticized by numerous Minuteman groups for backing Huckabee. (source: http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/12/minutemen_bash_ founder_over_hu.php)

Minuteman groups around the country have praised Dr. Paul for his work on immigration issues and are working to get him elected. Amnesty

Huckabee opposed the DREAM Act which would give college grants to illegal immigrants writing on his campaign website that “it would have put us on the slippery slope to amnesty for all. Because once we open that door [to amnesty] even a crack, we'll never get it closed again.” However he favored and defends the same type of scholarships in Arkansas. (source: http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Issues.View&Issue_id=4), (source: http://www.nwanews.com/story.php?paper=adg&section= News&storyid=104629), (source: http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/News/Headlines/ frtHEAD02POL011308.htm)

Ron Paul has been praised by Minuteman and “Citizens for Tom Tancredo” groups for his opposition to amnesty. (source)(http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID= /20071228/NEWS09/712280388/-1/)

Analysis: McCain and Huckabee now rivals

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - John McCain, meet Mike Huckabee. You're now rivals.

Until now the two Republican presidential candidates have been convenient allies — the two David's who knocked down Mitt Romney, the financial Goliath. But there's nothing convenient about Michigan and South Carolina, states that could make or break either candidate's hopes for being the next Republican presidential nominee.

Disappointed in Huckabee

by JMac Politics: Fayette County, Georgia and Beyond

I was disappointed in Huckabee's little jabs at Romney last night. While I haven't made up my mind in the elections yet, I have really liked Huckabee.

As he gains more attention and rises higher in the presidential candidate pecking order it seems his public persona is undergoing some forced changes. Forced because when he strikes out like he did last night it seems forced, it seems out of character and it isn't natural sounding.

The higher he goes the more "experts" are going to be funneling information to him on how he came across, what he needs to do, the best way to address this or that... They are going to force feed him their opinions. "You need to come across stronger." "You need to be more Presidential." "Be sure to get this point in somehow."

The rest of the guys on the stage last night have been through all of this before. Huckabee is somewhat of a newbie in the national presidential arena. He's being buffeted with opinions. He's on the go continually so he's tired and more susceptible to the force of his handler's opinion.

In many ways, the campaign trail is a test of character and mettle. This is where to some degree we, the general public, discover how our future President stands on principals, how they handle tough spots, how they handle stress. If Huckabee is allowing his handlers to change his core then he's not someone I want as President. Among other things, I'm looking for character and strength of conviction, two traits I thought he had in abundance.

Huckabee's likability, his freshness, his difference is something I think has catapulted him from the so-called lower tier into the top cadre of media attention grabbers.

If he is indeed listening to his handlers and they're telling him to attack, he needs to stop listening. If he truly is the kind of guy who spits at his opponents sporadically, then by all means keep doing it 'cause we want to see the real Huckabee.

STATEMENT FROM JOHN MCCAIN ON THE IOWA CAUCUS

U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement regarding the results of the Iowa Caucus:

"I thank each and every Iowan who braved the cold to caucus tonight, as well as my tremendous Iowa staff and leadership for all of their hard work over the past year. They worked wonders with far fewer resources than their competitors. I also congratulate Governor Huckabee on his victory tonight.

"Now the campaign turns to New Hampshire for the first-in-the-nation primary. As Granite State voters know best, I will continue to deliver straight talk about the critical issues facing our country. I will talk about the unique experience that prepares me to lead as commander in chief from day one, and makes me the only Republican who can win the White House in 2008.

"We started this together, New Hampshire, eight years ago. In five days, we're going to send the same message we did then: change is coming."
