Reid Takes Lead in Nevada

A new Las Vegas Review-Journal/Mason Dixon poll in Nevada shows Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) has opened a strong lead over challenger Sharron Angle (R), 44% to 37%, "after pummeling her in a ubiquitous TV and radio ad campaign that portrays the Tea Party favorite as 'too extreme.""

Said pollster Brad Coker: "He's had five perfect weeks. The race has been all about her, and he's been doing a good job of pounding her."

This is the best Reid has done against Angle this year in a series of Mason-Dixon polls. Previously, the two had been locked in a statistical dead heat with Angle finishing just ahead of Reid in February, 44% to 42%, and in June, 44% to 41%, and Reid finishing just ahead of Angle in May, 42% to 39%.

These results also track another recent poll of the race.

A new poll shows Harry Reid taking a 7% lead over Sharron Angle (44%-37%) according to a new Las Vegas Review Journal/Mason-Dixon poll. This follows millions of dollars in advertising Reid has aired attacking Sharron Angle and calling her an "extremist" because of her conservative views.

The good news? These changing poll numbers have taken place BEFORE we here at the Tea Party Express have gone up on the airwaves. In fact, it was because of bad polling data that we realized we needed to actually raise MUCH MORE money before we could go up on the airwaves and fight back - if we were going to defeat Reid.

Op-ed from Gary Black on the Importance of Food Safety in Georgia

Americans tend to take for granted that the food we buy at the supermarket, farmer's markets, and even roadside produce stands is safe. Unfortunately, there will be an occasional problem or recall but we quickly move past these and back into our default mode of trust and complacency. We assume somebody is keeping an eye on things. Well, somebody is, and in Georgia, that falls to the state Department of Agriculture which I am running to lead as Agriculture Commissioner.

Although we live in a time of political attacks, negative TV ads, and sound bites, I think it is important to talk about the real issues that will face those of us running for office should we be honored by the voters with their confidence. I think we owe you a plan of action as a part of our continuing job interview and that is exactly what I am going to provide over the coming weeks -- starting today with food safety.

Food safety is a core mission of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, and it must be pursued with diligence and fiscal discipline. I want to provide fresh, but experienced leadership in this arena.

It all starts with our Food safety inspectors who are the "boots on the ground" professionals whose seal of approval impacts public health, consumer confidence and the agricultural marketplace. We need to establish a positive, goal-oriented workplace accompanied by a system to measure results. I will inspire, motivate, and hold all inspectors accountable in a manner that will be best serve the consumers and farmers of Georgia.

We must enforce all food safety laws with science-based, common-sense standards for all and prejudice towards none. I will ensure that Department inspectors have the equipment and support to perform their duties effectively. We also need to ensure that each food safety inspection is thorough and conducted in a professional manner.

We also need to put in place better, more modern plans to provide back-up in emergency situations like a food-borne illness outbreak, natural disaster or homeland security threat.

Georgia is the Ninth largest state in the country and its largest industry is agriculture. To meet the challenges this presents, our inspectors need to be the best trained and educated in the country. We need to establish timelines for inspectors to complete continuing education through the International Food Protection Training Institute and Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO). I have a plan to underwrite this training without cost to the Georgia taxpayer and will give preference to in-state training whenever possible.

We must also establish a professional certification program for Georgia's food safety inspectors. Educational and service incentives will help retain the best employees, a move that in the long run will improve performance and be more cost-effective.

To improve our value to taxpayers, we need to utilize cost-effective new media and web-based technologies to improve consumer education on a wide array of topics including safe food handling practices and food recalls. We can also use these technologies in cooperation with producer and consumer groups to provide more online guidance on promoting locally produced food and the seasonal availability of Georgia products.

Consumer confidence is a key to the health of our agricultural economy, and it starts with a strong plan for improving food safety.

Karen Handel Responds to Georgia Right To Life False Attack

"Barren" Woman Comment Insulting to Women Everywhere Group Issues Made-Up Quote, Lists Other Candidates as Supporting Ban On In-Vitro Fertilization

Former Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel responded today to a Georgia Right to Life attack on her pro-life position in which the group fabricated a quote to support their decision not to endorse her and even called her a "barren" woman.

The group claims that Karen told them that she "does not believe that an embryonic human is a child." That is false. In fact, Karen does believe that an embryonic human is a child. Further, no one ever asked Karen this question, and if they had, they would know this.

GRTL's real problem with Karen is twofold: First, they disagree with her stance regarding exceptions to an abortion ban in cases of rape and incest. Secondly, Karen opposes the group's push to ban in-vitro fertilization, which has helped so many couples realize their dream of having children. The group has proposed legislation to virtually eliminate in-vitro. In a meeting with Karen, the group's leadership told her directly that fertility treatments are immoral and that their goal is to completely ban the procedure.

Dan Becker, the President of Georgia Right to Life even went so far as to say of Karen "Someone's desperate right to parenthood – because they're infertile, they're barren, whatever term you want to use – is an emotionally fraught subject that has our highest sympathy."

GRTL did endorse all of Karen's opponents and praised them for their opposition to rape and incest exceptions and their support for banning in-vitro fertilization. They are welcome to their position and will have to explain it to the voters in July.

They will also have to explain signing a statement vowing to protect life until "natural death" which is in clear opposition to the death penalty which Karen strongly supports.

The following is a statement from Karen on today's GRTL press release:

"My husband Steve and I tried for nearly ten years to have children. It is the single greatest disappointment in my life, and I can say with certainty that no one in this race cherishes human life more than I do. I am saddened that this group would resort to fabricating quotes and distorting my beliefs. I shared very personal information with the group's leadership, and they are well aware of my true beliefs. I am dismayed and very disappointed by their actions.

"I believe that life does indeed begin at conception, that an embryo is a life, and that an unborn child is a human life. While I oppose all abortions, I believe that, in addition to GRTL's exception for life of the mother, there should also be exceptions for rape and incest.

"Further, I am absolutely opposed to severely limiting fertility treatments, including in-vitro fertilization, and am saddened that my opponents appear to support. Tens of thousands of couples have been able to have children through fertility assistance. Their lives have been blessed by miracle of birth and enriched by the blessings that children uniquely have added to their lives.

Additionally, the Handel campaign provided the following perspective from a former director of GRTL:

"Karen is a loyal and trusted friend to conservatives in the pro-life, pro-family movement in Georgia. As Secretary of State she championed conservative causes like Photo ID and proof of citizenship for voting. Karen is strongly pro-life. She has supported every new law passed in Georgia limiting abortions including informed consent, parental notification, waiting periods, etc. To suggest otherwise for political motivations is transparent and wrong.

You will be reading media reports about the release of a preliminary report from the Office of Congressional Ethics.

This is a politically motivated witch hunt. I have done nothing wrong and am not going to let this tarnish my 30-year record of public service.

Our campaign will not miss a beat and we continue our quest to become the next governor of Georgia.

The statement released Monday by the campaign:

This has always been a political witch hunt fueled by Democrats who fear that Roy Barnes will lose the governor's race to Nathan Deal.

In its own report, the Office of Congressional Ethics admits that its efforts were incomplete and it does NOT conclude that Mr. Deal did anything wrong.

That's because Nathan Deal did nothing wrong.

This is a business Nathan was involved with before he went to Congress and was approved by the House ethics committee every year. There were never any tax dollars involved and there was never a contract with the state of Georgia.

This is an attempt by Nathan's political opponents to drag his good name through the mud. The complaint was brought by a liberal, George Soros sponsored group, fueled by the Democrat party of Georgia.

The only shred of truth in this political attack is that an innocent accounting error was made and subsequently corrected.

From Roll Call, a Capitol newspaper:

Deal's attorney Randy Evans dismissed the report Monday as inaccurate and reiterated that Deal had tied his retirement date to the House vote on health care reform, which occurred March 21.

"I think there were things that were obviously incorrect in the committee's report. We pointed that out. I was disappointed that the committee didn't take more time to get it right," Evans said. He added: "There were affidavits and other information that were submitted that made it clear that nothing in appropriate or improper had happened."

Doug MacGinnitie Launches "Mac Mobile"

Doug MacGinnitie, Republican candidate for Secretary of State, is the first statewide candidate from either party in Georgia to launch a mobile texting campaign. By texting Doug to 57375, supporters are directly connected to the campaign and can be instantaneously informed of updates and breaking news.

"It's exciting to launch a mobile campaign that will allow me to personally interact with supporters and volunteers statewide," stated MacGinnitie. "There is an increasingly mobile population, and our campaign has taken cues from the private sector to utilize this new technology and to improve efficiency."

Jeremy Jones, candidate for Georgia’s 9th congressional district, is announcing his drop from the 9th district race, and his entrance into the race for Georgia Senate District 53, currently held by Jeff Mullis.

After careful thought and consideration, Jones decided to switch to the 53rd district state race believing he can do more good at the state level than at the national level. Given the current bills being passed at the national level, it is past time to elect state senators who will uphold the constitutions of both Georgia and the United States. MacGinnitie Wins Reagan Day Dinner Straw Poll

Doug MacGinnitie, Republican candidate for Secretary of State, won the Union County Republican Party straw poll on Saturday at the Reagan Day Dinner held in Blairsville, Georgia. MacGinnitie defeated Brian Kemp, the appointed Secretary of State, receiving 62% of the 265 votes cast.

"I am honored and excited to have won the straw poll in Union County," stated MacGinnitie. "It is affirmation that our campaign is continuing to build momentum and strong grassroots support across the state."

The Reagan Day Dinner straw poll marked the first straw poll of 2010, and the first to label Kemp as an incumbent on the ballot. The significant win for MacGinnitie further illustrates that the grassroots party activists have made their decision and want MacGinnitie in the office of the Secretary of State.

"This win reaffirms the belief that Georgians are not looking for another career politician, but rather a successful businessman with private sector experience," stated MacGinnitie. "Our straw poll victories are a testament to our campaign's ability to organize a network of dedicated citizens who believe in our vision for fair and honest elections and job growth."

The effort that MacGinnitie's campaign has put into traveling the state has paid off. MacGinnitie has won eight of the last nine major straw polls conducted by local GOP organizations. Doug won the straw polls held in Cobb, DeKalb, Glynn, Henry, Muscogee, Union and Walker County sometimes by a 2-to-1 margin. The one poll where Doug fell short was in his opponent's old senate district where he still managed to earn 40% of the vote.

"At this point, grassroots party activists who go to these events have already met both candidates on several occasions and are familiar with each," said campaign manager Brandon Phillips. "Even with our opponent now having the advantage of incumbency, the grassroots of our party still continue to stand with Doug. Mitt Romney to Speak at Emory Law Event March 30

Mitt Romney will present "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness" and discuss United States courts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, in Emory University's Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will introduce Romney. A question-and-answer session will take place from 8 to 8:30 p.m., and a book signing will follow.

Harold Logsdon, Candidate for GA Insurance Commissioner: Insuring Georgia's Uninsured

One of the biggest challenges facing Georgia's next Insurance Commissioner is finding a way to insure the 1.7 million Georgians without health insurance, and finding ways to cut in the $6.6 billion negative impact these uninsured have on Georgia's economy.

With innovative ideas, and by working with insurance companies through free market and free enterprise, I believe we can find ways to insure about one-third of these people. If we can do that, insure about 500,000 of these 1.7 million, it would mean a $2 billion economic boost to Georgia's economy.

This may include coming up with incentives to encourage the young and healthy to purchase insurance now. Georgia has been a front-runner in Health Savings Accounts, which could also be one solution to help the uninsured become insured.

On thing is certain, the answer is through free market and free enterprise, not some public option plan being pushed on us by Washington.

It's also time for Georgia to sell insurance across state lines.

This idea is part of the solution to healthcare.

SB 407 provides for this and answers all of my concerns about selling across state lines.

It allows states to form consortiums, allowing for a larger market -- which in turn, allows for lower insurance rates.

Not only does it allow for agents outside the state to sell insurance to Georgia residents, but SB 407 also allows Georgia agents to sell into other states -- increasing their market area.

SB 407 also gives Georgia's Insurance Commissioner the authority to protect Georgia's citizens, to go to bat for them when they have insurance disputes.

Georgia needs SB 407.

Tuesday night's debate in Warner Robins was a great success for the Austin Scott campaign. As the only major candidate not to abandon his elected position, Austin offered a unique perspective on the challenges facing Georgia. He distinguished himself by offering clear, concrete solutions to the problems facing Georgia citizens.

He expressed his strong fiscal conservatism, his unwavering commitment to quality public education, and that he is the GOP candidate most likely to win the general election in November.

"I haven't had the privilege of serving in a district that's 90% Republican like some of my opponents. I've gotten elected in the same district that (Democratic congressman) Jim Marshall wins," he said. "Think about who can carry the day for our party in November. It's all about that."

At one point, Austin had the whole crowd in laughter when he directed a question to the only candidate who declined to attend the debate. The event hosts had placed an empty chair on stage bearing the absent candidate's name.

In fact, in a new poll released yesterday by the independent organization Public Policy Polling shows that Karen has closed the gap against John Oxendine, and the race is quickly developing into a two person contest.

The poll was conducted February 26 - 28. In the head-to-head match-up the numbers are:

Jeremy Jones: Open Letter to 9th District Congressional Candidates

Fellow Candidates,

It has been wonderful to meet and get to know each of you. I truly believe we have learned a lot from each other and I consider all of you new friends. Please understand, this letter is from the heart. There is nothing to back it up except my word.

Last week we were all working our campaigns with the full intention of having a successful election in July. The actions of Congressman Deal appear to have thrown all of that out the window, or at least have sped it up a great deal. Each of us believes we are the best candidate to serve the people of the 9th district, or we would not be running.

However, I ask that each of you consider the ramifications of the upcoming special election. I have decided to run in the special election as I know some of you will as well, and the others are most likely considering it. However, I know one of the reasons you would run in the special election is to be sure you are not faced with running against an "incumbent" in July. I have publicly made this promise, if I win the special election, I will not run for the seat in the upcoming primary/general election.

I make this promise because I know how busy the campaign season will be in May, June, and July. I also know how busy the person holding the office will be. It will not be fair to the people of the 9th district to attempt to serve in what we all agree a most critical point in our government's history, and devote the needed time to run an effective campaign to adequately present yourself to the citizens of the 9th district.

It was my every intention to serve the people of the 9th district next year, and for the years to come. However, as I know most of us believe, this election is not about me, you, or any other candidate. It is about our country, Georgia, and the people of the 9th district.

I ask you consider what I have said, and I humbly ask for your support to ensure a Democrat does not win this special election. If I win the special election, you can devote the time required to run the campaign that will illustrate to the people who you really are, and also allow the people of the district to be well represented for the next 9 months in Washington. It truly is a situation where the real winners are the citizens of 9th district.

Bert Loftman, MD for US Congress, statement re: Nathan Deal

Nathan Deal is leaving his Congressional office in order to run for the Governor and this will greatly effect the current Congressional race. There will be a special election probably sometime in April. I have a number of reactions:

I believe that it is wrong for politicians to leave their elected office in order to run for another office. I pledge that I will never do this.

The advantages for the career politicians is that they already have name recognition and have accumulated large amounts of special interest funds in their war chests with which to begin a media advertising blitz.

The advantage for non career politicians is that the political tide is against career politicians. Their large media blitz will likely backfire and turn off the voters. Also, there will not be other competing races so concerned voters will be better able to concentrate on the candidates and issues of the Congressional race.

My advantage is that the issues of the FairTax, Controlling the Fed, and Honoring the Constitution returns us to our American Heritage. These time proven solutions will solve most of Americas problems such as job-creation, improved education, health care reform, lower taxes, less government, and campaign finance reform.

A vote for me is a vote for a healthy America and healthy Americans.

Jeremy Jones Annouces New Direction for Campaign

Today Nathan Deal announced he would resign his seat in the US House of Representatives effective March 6, 2010. Deal represents the 9th district of Georgia.

In light of the announcement, Jeremy Jones, currently seeking to replace Nathan Deal has announced a new direction in his campaign. Jones has announced he will run in the special election, date yet to be determined.

Jones also said when he takes office, he will NOT run for the new term to begin next year.

“The issues facing us today are to important for a Congressman to worry about running a campaign. Congressman Deal stepped down because he realizes the time commitment in both running a campaign, and serving in DC in these critical times. It only makes sense, in the best interest of the people of the 9th district they have representative dedicated to serving them full time, not someone worrying about an election.”

Under Georgia law, Governor Sonny Perdue will set a date for the special election. It could be no sooner than early April, but no date has been yet announced. Jones also stated, “If the election were held in early April, the new Congressman would be forced to learn by fire and get caught up on over half of the legislative session. To believe one can do that, serve the people of the 9th, AND seek to run a campaign that will be highly time consuming simply does not seem possible.”

Karen Handel: 2/26/10 Update

Yesterday, I announced my plan reduce the size of Georgia's government, solve our budget problems and save $404 million in taxpayer money. I hope I can count on you to stand with me in this pledge by following this link.

The fact is, our state government is in crisis and we have a fundamental choice to make. We can either cut government or raise taxes, and for me, the only option is to reduce spending and scale back Georgia's non-essential government programs, not raise taxes on its citizens.

To be blunt, my plan is to reduce the size of Georgia's government. Permanently. Will you stand with me on this pledge, and help me spread the word by forwarding this email to 5 neighbors, friends or family members?

I've called for several budget reforms and spending drawbacks that will save our state hundreds of millions of dollars. No more budget gimmicks like furloughs of our state employees and no more waste on programs we just don't need or want.

Janet, we're going to fundamentally change the way your government spends your money.
I've called for a 10% reduction in the size of state government. This will permanently eliminate 7,800 unneeded jobs, save the state more than $400 million and go a long way toward filling what could be a $1 billion budget hole.

The Handel Administration will also employ 'zero-based budgeting,' which means every state agency will start at zero each budget year. We will no longer begin the process with last year's funding level.

As Secretary of State, I permanently cut my budget by more than 20% by cutting the workforce, consolidating services and reforming the agency. And that's what I'll do as Governor.
When Fulton County faced a deficit of $100 million and a possible $3 million property tax increase, I worked across party lines to reduce spending and balance the budget, without a tax increase.

I believe state government is fat and there is plenty of room to cut. I've proven that I can do it. But, I can't do it without your help.

If you want a Governor who has the courage to take on the status quo and make the tough decisions that will shrink the size of government, I'd really appreciate your help as I push forward in this race.

Dozens of candidates from across the country who are running on a Tenth Amendment platform will be meeting to discuss strategies to promote a return to state sovereignty across America. Last week, I was attacked by some career politicians for making serious, long-term budget cuts in the Secretary of State's office - rather than relying on short-term ploys like furloughs.

When I took over as Secretary of State, the office was bloated, outdated, inefficient, and poorly managed. So, I changed it. Bringing in a results-oriented leadership team, we went to work to modernize the Agency.

And, to the dismay of some, I did the unthinkable. I actually reduced the number of employees in my office.

This is what differentiates me from most career politicians in our government today.

I believe our government is bloated and should be smaller… and smarter! This is the time to make the difficult decisions.

We cannot furlough our way out of this budget crisis. They just don't make sense in the face of ongoing deficits. And, it's not leadership.

Those who say that furloughs are the only way have either been in office so long that they've become part of the status quo or they're afraid to make the hard decisions Georgia needs.

If Georgia businesses ran their companies this way, they would be out of business. As your next Governor, I will do things differently.

I'll lead a top-to-bottom review of state government. We will reprioritize our spending to those mission-critical services that government should focus on - like education, health, public safety, and infrastructure. And then, we'll cut the rest. We'll realign the top-heavy management structure and look for the opportunities to consolidate and privatize.

My message to Georgia's taxpayers is a simple one: You deserve better, and we will do better.
Under my leadership, budgets aren't going to be balanced on the back of employees being forced to take unpaid furlough days. You won't hear talk of "sharing the pain."

Some jobs in state government are more important than others. Teachers and state patrol officers should not - and will not - be treated the same as the bureaucrats.

For almost a year, my campaign has traveled around Georgia, listening to voters speak about their frustrations with "business as usual" in politics. Release: Only Oxendine defeats Barnes, says Rasmussen

Rasmussen, a popular national pollster often featured on Fox News and the Sean Hannity Show, released poll results Thursday showing that only John Oxendine defeats Roy Barnes in a match up that pits the popular State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner against former Governor Roy Barnes.

According to the release, “John Oxendine, Georgia’s fire and insurance commissioner, picks up 44% of the vote while Barnes gets 42% in that match-up.”

Regarding the GOP Primary to be held on July 20, 2010, Rasmussen finds that “Oxendine holds a wide lead in the 2010 Republican Primary.”

“It is worth noting that this survey was conducted THIS week,” said Tim Echols, Campaign Manager.

Graves Appoints McCutchen Campaign Chair and Launches Team 180°

Calls out Democrats for late arrival to the dance

Senator Eric Johnson, Republican candidate for Governor, today released the following statement regarding the new list of legislators that failed to file their state income taxes:

“Last year, I was proud to lead the fight to make sure that every member of the General Assembly paid their taxes. I believe that politicians that tell you to pay your taxes should pay theirs. After a year of campaigning across our state, I know that my top priority as Governor must be jobs. But I still get the most potent crowd response when I talk about holding tax cheating politicians accountable. It is just plain common sense that an elected official must live under the same rules as everyone else.”

“Like you, I was shocked by recent reports that even after our work last year, there is a new group of legislators who refuse to file or pay their income taxes. They are thumbing their nose at the process and working a system they know how to manipulate better than anyone. I believe, as others now do, we must build on the good first step we took last year. We can solve this problem immediately by making it against the rules of the House and Senate to sit in the legislature while refusing to pay or file taxes.”

“As a Republican leader, I do have to laugh to myself a bit when I see Democrats running to the TV cameras saying they want to resolve this issue. When I discovered this problem last session, I didn’t know who was on the list or if they were a Republican or Democrat. I didn’t try to make this a partisan issue because it was simply a matter of right and wrong. However, the Democrats came out firing at me in an effort to cover up for their own.”

“After their actions last year, I don’t know how a Democrat could look Georgians in the eye and say they are a leader on this issue. They either fought reform publicly, fought it behind the scenes, or were conspirators through their silence. In Georgia, the overwhelming majority of violators were Democrats and they were following the lead of their tax cheating role models in the federal government. For goodness sake, the Democratic Treasury Secretary who oversees the IRS failed to pay $35,000 in taxes despite repeated warnings. Based on their actions, we cannot allow Georgia Democrats to hide their failures by blaming Republicans or by shading the truth with tough sounding rhetoric.”

Eric Johnson Comments on Unemployment

Pledges to make job creation top priority as “The Jobs Governor”

Senator Eric Johnson, Republican candidate for Governor, today commented on the Georgia Department of Labor report that the state's unemployment rate has risen to 10.3 percent.

“Today’s unemployment numbers reinforce my desire to make jobs my first priority, my second priority, and my third priority. I am absolutely committed to becoming The Jobs Governor,” said Johnson.

On Tuesday, Johnson attended the first debate of the 2010 primary and clearly dominated the subject matter by staying focused on the economy and job creation. In his first opportunity to share his priorities and challenge those of his opposition, Eric Johnson used the word “job” 18 times and mentioned jobs in all of his answers.

“Other campaigns will pay lip service to job creation because they have to in a bad economy. But when left to their own devices, they would rather distract, attack, or talk about things that simply don’t matter,” said Johnson.

Johnson believes that every issue he will face as Governor falls in one of three categories:

1. Issues that will help create new jobs (i.e. education reform)

2. Issues impeding the creation of new jobs (i.e. water and traffic)

3. Issues that must be resolved because they distract us from our priority of creating jobs (i.e. ethics)

Jeremy Jones: Open Letter to the Citizens of Georgia’s 9th Congressional District

Fellow Citizens,

One year ago today President Barak Obama was inaugurated as our 44th President. Obviously, I was disappointed by having a Democrat in the Whitehouse, especially with a democratically controlled House and Senate. One year ago does not seem that long ago to me. However, in exactly half that amount of time, six months, Georgia will go to polls to set up the first major election to overturn this most left leaning congress in our history. July 20th is primary day in Georgia. In the 9th district of Georgia there are many candidates wanting to earn your vote to be the Republican nominee for the November general election, including myself.

I have been campaigning for over a year now. I had decided, long before our current congressman decided to not seek re-election, it was time for a new voice in DC. It was time we removed career politicians and allowed the citizen to once again represent the citizens of Georgia. Many things have occurred since I decided to run, including over a dozen other people joining the race. However, none of them were willing to take on our current congressman. Ask yourself, if they were not willing to stand up for what was right then, why would they stand up for what is right later?

It is my firm belief almost every other candidate got into this race because it was an open seat, the path of least resistance. The decisions we are facing in the next 2, 4, and 6 years will not be easy, and will certainly not be on the path of least resistance. WNEG-TV to originate, televise GOP gubernatorial debate in Athens

Athens-based WNEG-TV will originate and televise the Republican debate of candidates for governor on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from the University of Georgia campus. The one-hour debate will begin at 7 p.m. with WNEG-TV news anchor Ray Metoyer moderating.
The Athens-Clarke County Republican Party and the University of Georgia College Republicans are sponsoring the campus event in the South Auditorium, Psychology-Journalism Plaza.

While the event is not open to the general public, it will be broadcast live on Athens’ WNEG, WALB of Albany, WGCL of Atlanta, and WMAZ of Macon. The Georgia News Network also will carry audio of the debate live over its coverage area.

Because incumbent RepublicanGovernorSonny Perdue is term-limited and unable to seek re-election, Georgians will elect a new governor on Nov. 2.

All seven gubernatorial candidates were invited to participate in the Athens debate. Confirmed candidates attending are U.S. Representative Nathan Deal, ex-Secretary of State Karen Handel, president pro tempore of the state Senate Eric Johnson, state representative Austin Scott, state Senator Jeff Chapman, and businessman Ray McBerry. State insurance commissioner and candidate John Oxendine reported that a scheduling conflict will prevent him from participating.

Graves Signs Repeal It! Pledge

Becomes 1st Candidate in GA-09 to agree to repeal Obama Care

State Representative and Republican 9th District congressional candidate Tom Graves (R-Ranger) announced today that he signed the Club for Growth’s Repeal It! pledge agreeing, once elected, to sponsor and support legislation to repeal the Obama health care reform bill.

The Club for Growth launched the Repeal It! pledge program today and Graves’ became one of the first candidates in the nation to sign the pledge and the first candidate in Georgia’s 9th Congressional District.

“President Obama’s and congressional Democrats’ plan for the federal government’s takeover of our health care system will lead to higher taxes on small businesses, higher premiums for families, opens the door for taxpayer-funded abortions and will do nothing to make health care more affordable,” said Graves. “By becoming one of the first candidates in the nation to sign this pledge, Georgians know that I am the conservative who is committed to turning back these liberal policies that are driving this country to the brink of bankruptcy.”

The Repeal It! pledge states:

“I, Tom Graves, hereby pledge to the people of my district (GA-09) upon my election to the U.S. House of Representatives, to sponsor and support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover passed in 2010, and replace it with real reforms that lower health care costs without growing government.”

Graves has been outspoken in his opposition to the Democrats’ health plans that passed the House and Senate last year. He has said health care reforms should be Patient-Centered and Patient-Driven to make health care more affordable, portable and accessible and implemented through the free-market, not by expanding and growing government.

Graves released his Patient Centered Patient Driven health care reform principles last year.

The Club for Growth is the nation’s premier free-market, free enterprise group of conservatives and the Club for Growth PAC endorsed Graves’ candidacy last September.

Graves announced earlier this year he would seek the 9th District Congressional seat, which is currently held by Congressman n Deal who is running for Governor.

A poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP), a Democratic survey firm, shows Scott Brown has overtaken Martha Coakley, and holds a 48 percent to 47 percent lead as the Jan. 19 special election approaches.

Wood Campaign Gains Momentum in Georgia

/PRNewswire/ -- Max Wood, candidate for Attorney General, has been pleased with the amount of support he and his campaign have generated so far.

"I am not an established politician, unlike my opponent. Many people are meeting me for the first time on the campaign trail. They seem to appreciate the strong qualifications I would bring to the office of Attorney General. The people of Georgia are hungry for real leadership and I believe I am the candidate best suited for the office of Attorney General," Wood said.

Wood announced his candidacy in August of 2009 prior to going on a six week tour of duty in Washington D.C. at the National Guard Bureau. "I am extremely proud of my military background. "I am a Republican through and through, but if I am elected Attorney General, I also have a responsibility to be non-political when dealing with matters of the state," he said. He points to his stint as United States Attorney as an example of how he will conduct himself in office.

"I prosecuted Democrats and Republicans while United States Attorney. It was never a consideration to go easy on someone because they were a political insider or connected to one particular political party," he stated.

Wood served as United States Attorney in the Middle District of Georgia from 2001 to 2009. He was the longest serving United States Attorney in the area since the L.B.J. Administration.

Surprise Candidate Rising Like a Meteor in the Governor's Race

Having won several polls in the Governor's race across the state in the past month, Ray McBerry's campaign continues to pick up steam across the state.

In the past month, McBerry won first place in the governor's race straw poll conducted in Tifton the week following two candidate forums in south Georgia, one in Tifton and another in Valdosta. Even Austin Scott, a native of Tifton, came in second to McBerry among the seven Republicans.

Meanwhile, Ray McBerry scored overwhelming victories in the online polls for the Governor's race that were conducted by both the Augusta area Young Republicans in east Georgia and the Paulding County GOP in west Georgia.

In north Georgia's Walker County, the McBerry Campaign came in second place in the Republican party's straw poll, being bested only by Nathan Deal, in whose "back yard" the straw poll was conducted.

For several months now, there have been record turnouts each time that Ray McBerry has spoken at different county GOP meetings across the state, leading to an increase in the number of speaking invitations from other county chairmen.

Additionally, Ray has been invited to be the "kickoff" speaker for nearly a dozen " tea party patriot" groups springing up around the state -- groups who are looking for candidates who are not part of the current Democrat and Republican establishment. The most recent of these events was this past Thursday evening in Dalton in which approximately 200 people turned out to hear Ray speak on the subject of "States' Rights."

The record turnout at both Republican-sponsored events and these "town hall" type meetings every time that Ray McBerry is invited to speak have certainly gotten the attention of many within the Republican Party. Being called "the best public speaker in Georgia today" by a number of statewide candidates, Ray's message of "States' Rights" is resounding incredibly well in all areas of the state and among all groups, including "blue dog" Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents, as well as traditional conservative Republicans.

The McBerry Campaign team continues to grow with each new week and is the largest volunteer organization in the governor's race among both Republican and Democrat contenders. Handel "All In" For Governor's Race

The following statement from Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel was released today, December 22nd, 2009:

I have spoken to Governor Perdue and informed him that I will resign as Secretary of State by the end of the year.

This was an extraordinarily difficult decision - professionally and personally. However, I know that it is the right one - for the Office of the Secretary of State, the team there, and the citizens of Georgia who have entrusted me with this important position, as well as for my campaign for Governor.

Over the past month, Georgia's economic climate has continued to deteriorate, and we've all experienced disbelief and anger over the actions of some in the State Legislature. As I've considered this new landscape, it became clear to me that, while certainly manageable, serving as Secretary of State while also running for Governor was no longer the best approach for the office or my campaign.

I also took into consideration that I did not want any perceived conflicts of interest concerning my overseeing the primary or general elections, investigating complaints that arise, and certifying the results of the elections while a candidate for Governor and serving as Secretary of State.

Georgia's next Governor must be a real leader with solid, conservative principles, a vision for our state, and the executive/business management experience needed to actually run our state and achieve meaningful progress on the issues we face.

Our next Governor must also have a commitment to ethics reform that is beyond question and a track record of ethical leadership. These are the reasons I decided to run for Governor, and they are the reasons that I am going to win.

So, as we enter the new year, the people of Georgia need to know that I am all in for the Governor's race. This decision allows me to focus 100% on becoming the Republican nominee and winning the election in November.

This decision allows the Governor to appoint an interim Secretary of State to focus completely on the important issues in the agency, including the ongoing situation with the US Department of Justice involving Georgia's voter verification process and overseeing the 2010 elections.

The next Secretary of State will have the benefit of a team of very talented individuals who will continue to serve the office - and the State - with the same level of commitment and dedication that I have appreciated for three years. I am confident that the transition will be smooth, and the people of Georgia will be well served by this team and whomever the Governor appointments to lead them.

First, I want to thank those who have signed up to be a part of my Campaign Facebook Group. Your support doing so is greatly appreciated. Additionally, I want to thank those that have confirmed as attending or maybe attending the Money Bomb event page.

I know there has been a flurry of money bombs out there. Seems like Rand Paul, Adam Kokesh, or Peter Schiff is having one all the time and seemingly people are constantly sending money by the flurry to them. I also recognize that this is the holidays, and people in this area specifically are hurting financially. I can feel your pain, I too am personally dealing with such hardships due to this ongoing economic slowdown.

However, from speaking with people around Georgia's 13th Congressional District, they tell me constantly the long overdue need to get Congressman David Scott removed from office, and that it must be done in 2010.

When I tell them of my plan to offer a stimulus package in Congress that does not include additional spending, but instead, tax cuts on individuals and small business, tax credits for small businesses and entrepreneurs, and tax roll backs for investors - then explain the reasons why and how these things will spur the growth of small businesses that then will lead to the hiring of Americans across this country, people see that this is the true economic recovery we need. Private sector jobs is the key - and they recognize I have a plan that will work.

When they hear of my plan to merge private sector and public sector into a cooperative program that helps to educate and retrain unemployed and welfare recipients to become business owners and managers, to assist them in launching their own business, and then have those new business owners hire other unemployed and welfare recipients, and that through this process, we help instill pride, respect, and esteem back into the individual - they realize that here is real change that is needed for our country, change that will raise up urban populations to self reliance and fiscal independence, and that I am the man to bring this to Congress.

When I explain my plan to reform education to get the Federal Government out of the schools and get more control back in the hands of parents, too help get more resources to the states to help build up urban schools, expand teacher availability and retention, as well as, reward student involvement and hard work - they see a vision that can revolutionize our education system and give opportunity for all children and give hope to those who feel hopeless in their communities.

However, I am having trouble reaching out and getting my message heard by everyone in the District - and I must reach everyone.

I am not rich, I am not even modestly comfortable. I'm a regular guy just like you, working hard to make a living, and provide for my family. I don't have the vast resources that my opponent does. He has raised a huge sum already - most of which has come from OUTSIDE of Georgia. Special interests and lobbying groups have a marked interest in making sure David Scott stays in office.

A Health Care bill without verification is "a toothless tiger," Deal says

As the U.S. Senate takes up the debate on Health Care, Congressman Nathan Deal is urging the U.S. Senate to include verification of citizenship in their version of the bill.

"We have seen indications that the Senate wants to include language requiring U.S. citizenship," said Deal. "But without a requirement of verification, this is a toothless tiger."

A Republican candidate for governor, Deal was the author of a 2005 law which required verification of citizenship to receive Medicaid benefits. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that requiring enrollees to document their U.S. citizenship would reduce Medicaid spending by $220 million over five years and by $735 million over ten years.

Deal's action in 2005 has allowed millions of deserving U.S. citizens to keep their Medicaid benefits at a time when states are facing budget shortfalls because states have been given the tools to prevent millions of illegal aliens from using up limited public assistance resources.

"This is an important anti-fraud provision that has effectively and efficiently prevented millions of illegal aliens from fraudulently accessing taxpayer-funded benefits," Deal said

He proposed a verification amendment in the first House health care bill this year and it was voted down on a party line vote. A second attempt was not allowed by House leaders, including liberal Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

"If we fail to include verification in the final legislation, we can thank Speaker Pelosi for giving illegal aliens taxpayer-funded health care," Deal said. "This is taking place at a time when Georgia and other states across the nation are forced to make dramatic cuts to their budgets. It is more important than ever to make sure that our limited public assistance dollars are focused exclusively on those who legally qualified to receive them."

About Admiral Marty Evans, USN (Ret.)

Marsha J. Evans’ distinguished career has combined both military service and leadership of the nation’s premier non-profit organizations. During her nearly 30-year career with the Navy, Evans distinguished herself as one of only a handful of women to reach the rank of rear admiral, and gained a reputation for forging new ground for women in the military. Admiral Evans held a variety of command positions overseeing multi-million dollar budgets and thousands of employees.

She was the Chief of Staff at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and the first woman to command a U.S. naval station (Treasure Island in the San Francisco Bay Area). In 1992, she chaired the task force that developed a strategy to address the gender-based issues that gave rise to the Tailhook situation. Among the actions that resulted was the opening of assignments to women onboard Navy combatant ships. She held the top positions at the Navy Recruiting Command, where she managed 6,000 employees in1,200 locations and recruited more than 70,000 officers and sailors annually, and then at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She retired in 1998 as rear admiral.

In January 1998, Evans assumed leadership of Girl Scouts of the USA, the largest organization representing girls in the world, with troops in every zip code of America. Evans revolutionized the 90-year old organization and modernized its vision and programs for its nearly three million young members. Under her leadership, Girl Scouts created cutting-edge programs in science, technology, sports, money management and community service.

Evans updated Girl Scouts’ image, enhanced its recruiting practices, and increased its number of adult volunteers to nearly one million, the highest number in the organization’s history. Throughout Evans’ tenure, Girl Scouts enjoyed a continuous increase in young membership and reached an unprecedented level of diversity as African-American, Asian and a record number of Hispanic girls discovered the organization.

From August 2002 through December 2005, Evans was the 13th President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross, the largest and one of the nation’s most distinguished humanitarian aid organizations. With an annual operating budget of more than $4 billion, the Red Cross assists millions of Americans each year by providing urgent aid to victims of disasters, teaching safety preparedness and lifesaving skills, collecting, processing and distributing nearly half the nation’s blood supply, and assisting Armed Forces members and their families. The American Red Cross also provides help and hope to victims of disasters and disease in more than 30 countries.

In 2005 alone, under Evans’ leadership, Red Cross volunteers and staff assisted the victims of more than 70,000 natural- and human-caused disasters, from single family fires to large-scale events including the evacuation of a major American city; collected almost 6.5 million units of blood; trained more than 12 million people in lifesaving skills such as first aid and CPR; helped thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected; responded to extraordinary humanitarian emergencies including Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma and the devastating December 2004 tsunamis in South Asia; and made major progress in eradicating measles in Africa.

Over 1.3 million families received direct emergency Red Cross assistance in the wake of the hurricanes and the flood of New Orleans. For her leadership of the Red Cross response, Non-Profit Times named her “Executive of the Year” for 2005.

During her nearly three-and-a-half years at the Red Cross helm, Evans led the charge to create programs and establish business practices that were inclusive of all populations. She championed the development and implementation of the Red Cross Diversity Business Model and incorporated diversity into the Red Cross five year strategic plan as an organizational priority. To this end, with the input of more than 6,000 Red Crossers, community leaders and other partners and stakeholders, she developed the 2003 Strategic Plan to focus resources on the programs and services communities needed most.

Additionally, Evans led the Red Cross in implementing a bold, new initiative, Together We Prepare. With five simple steps – make a plan, build a disaster kit, get trained, give blood, volunteer – people in communities prepared themselves, their families, schools, businesses and neighborhoods for the unexpected. She also forged a new, cooperative relationship with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, enabling the Red Cross to move forward with its blood processing modernization strategy and plans.

Today Evans speaks to business and community audiences on leadership and diversity issues. Along with her position on the Board of Directors with the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), she’s director of the Office Depot, U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, Weight Watchers International, the North Highland Company and Huntsman Corporation.

Evans has been honored with numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. She was a 1979-80 White House Fellow. The White House Fellows Association awarded her the 2002 John W. Gardner Legacy of Leadership Award. In 2005, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute honored her with the Four Freedoms Award.

“Marty,” as she is known to friends and colleagues, is from Springfield, Illinois, home of the LPGA State Farm Classic. She graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles with an AB in Diplomacy and World Affairs. She later earned a Master’s degree in Law and Diplomacy from Tuft’s University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Her degree was supplemented by professional studies at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and the National War College in Washington, DC.

Op-Ed: Dems ooze hate‏

"I guess the Georgia Democratic Party has changed their name to the DemoHate party of Georgia," said Tim Echols, campaign manager for John Oxendine. "Having failed miserably at winning elections based upon policy and ideas, Roy Barnes and party chair Jane Kidd and the liberals at the Georgia Democrat Party have launched their third hit piece on John Oxendine.

Echols said that last week, using the time honored Clinton tactic of politics of personal destruction, the Democrats have asked on their website whose the most corrupt politician in Georgia.

"Our first observation is they made a glaring oversight by failing to include Roy Barnes," said Echols. "Secondly, this valuephobic Democratic party has clearly telegraphed that they intend to ooze only hate, maybe because they know they can’t win the election in 2010 if the election policy and issues."

Echols said being called corrupt by the Democrats of Georgia is a little like being called ugly by a frog.

On this Veterans Day, we salute everyone who has served in defense of our great nation and preserved the liberties that we enjoy today.

We also offer a special prayer for the tens of thousands who are stationed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world. And please keep in your thoughts and prayers those who were killed in the Fort Hood tragedy a few days ago.

We should be ever mindful of the sacrifices that our men and women of the military -- and their families -- make for us each and every day. We give thanks to those who have strengthened our liberties, all too often at great personal costs to them and their families.

Jones Speaks to Catoosa County Patriots

Jeremy Jones, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the US House to represent the 9th District of Georgia, spoke on Tuesday, November 3rd to the Catoosa County Patriots at their scheduled meeting. Jones was invited to share his ideas and opinions on current events affecting Georgian’s. Before his speech Teresa Tatum, co-founder of the Catoosa Chapter, shared a video explaining the difference between a Democracy and a Republic.

Mr. Jones was grateful for the opportunity to speak to the newly founded group and was honored to be the first congressional candidate to speak to the group. “This group, and groups similar, will be in power soon. I am seeking the Republican nomination because I believe in Republican values. Our problem is many elected Republicans act more like Democrats than they do Republicans.” Jones emphasized he was in this race before the Republican incumbent, Nathan Deal, decided not seek re-election and run for Governor. “I choose to run, not for a job promotion, and not because the door was open. I entered the race because professional politicians have had their turn. It is time to allow a citizen to represent the citizens. It is my goal to De-power DC.”

In sharp contrast to the professional politicians running, Mr. Jones allowed his entire allotment of time to be used for questions from the group. “It is time people seeking office stop talking and start listening.”

After the event, many people stayed to ask Mr. Jones more questions, and thank him for running. Several people signed up as volunteers for his campaign. “It should be a wake-up call to the other professional politicians, the people at these events have, for the most part, never been a part of a campaign, but are now ready to support a newcomer such as myself. The status quo is finished, we will win, and we will depower DC!”

Rep. Scott Breaks National Walking Record

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Rep. Austin Scott announced that he now holds the record for the longest walk by an American politician, taking the record previously held by former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Lawton Chiles since 1970.

"I'm surprised that the 'Walkin’ Lawton' record stood as long as it did," said Scott. "I guess there just aren't that many politicians who want to walk throughout their states the way I did."

The Chiles walk was recorded as 1,003 miles and Scott's walk is officially recorded as 1,068. To put a walk of this length into perspective, it can be measured in several ways:
From Atlanta:

· More than 250 miles West of Dallas, Texas
· More than 100 miles North of Toronto, Canada
· 90 miles past Omaha, Nebraska
· To Grenada, Mississippi, and back, twice.
From New York City:
· Within 10 miles of Little Rock, Arkansas
· More than 70 miles West of Iowa City, Iowa
· Within 40 miles of Orlando, Florida

"The quest to understand people doesn't come from inside the Capitol or from a room full of lobbyists,” said Scott. “It comes from continuous dialogue with the people to be served. It comes from interacting with and knowing the people and places that comprise a place, a state and a nation. It is difficult to get where you are going without knowing where you are from, and I pledge that as Governor, I will never forget the people I met or the places I saw on my walk."

Current Miss United States Erin Grizzle became the newest GA-9 Freedom Fighter supporting State Rep. Tom Graves’ bid for Congress. Grizzle, who was the grand marshal of this year’s Apple Festival Parade, endorsed Graves at the beginning of this year’s parade.

“Tom Graves is a strong conservative and exactly the kind of leader we need in Washington,” said Grizzle. “I encourage Ellijay and Gilmer County to join me and elect Tom to the U.S. Congress.”

“It’s an honor to have Erin join our campaign and lend her support to this effort,” said Graves. “All of us in the Graves Brigade enjoyed the Apple Festival Parade and having Erin become the latest GA-9 Freedom Fighter is a big honor for our campaign.”

Our Country Deserves Better: Support Doug Hoffman, NY

You've heard the news by now - there's a hotly contested congressional race taking place in Upstate New York.

It's not your typical election, in fact it's a Special Election to fill a vacant seat that had been held by a Republican. Here's where the problem comes in: there are 3 candidates but only 1 of them is a conservative.

On the ballot are a liberal Democrat, a liberal Republican and a Conservative candidate, Doug Hoffman. We here at the Our Country Deserves Better Committee are supporting the Conservative candidate, Doug Hoffman, just as other conservative leaders like Fred Thompson and Gov. Sarah Palin have.

How liberal is that liberal Republican, Dede Scozzafava? This should answer the question for you: the founder of the far-Left Daily Kos website, Markos Moulitsas, has endorsed her over the Democrat. As the New York Times reported with glee:

Roughly two weeks ago, Ms. Scozzafava received a prominent endorsement, though not necessarily a very helpful one for a Republican. In a post on his Daily Kos Web site, the liberal activist Markos Moulitsas called Ms. Scozzafava “actually the most liberal candidate in the race."

The Special Election takes place November 3rd - which means time is running out in this campaign. We are asking all supporters of the Our Country Deserves Better Committee to make a contribution to help us support Conservative Doug Hoffman in this race. Doug MacGinnitie Launches Effort to Increase Voting Opportunities for Military Personnel

Republican candidate for Georgia Secretary of State Doug MacGinnitie today launched an effort to increase opportunities for active duty service members and Reservists serving on active duty to participate in Georgia elections.

Research done by the Heritage Foundation in 2008 shows that 75-80% of military voters from across the United States were disenfranchised by their inability to request and return an absentee ballot within time limits as required by law. To make matters worse, for those who did cast an absentee ballot; local officials often reject military absentee ballots at far higher rates than other absentee ballots.

"Our men and women in uniform are putting their lives on the line to defend our freedoms," said MacGinnitie. "We should do everything possible to ensure they have the opportunity to participate in the most basic of American rights, the right to vote."

In Georgia all absentee ballots must be returned by 7pm on election day. In runoffs, it is virtually impossible for active duty personnel forward deployed in hazardous duty environments; serving on ships or aboard submarines to request and return a ballot in four weeks.

To address this problem, MacGinnitie has created his Military Voting Advisory Committee, composed of veterans and reservists from across the state. Experts from the legal and technology communities will also serve on the committee to assist in their respective fields. The mission is to develop policy ideas to solve this critical flaw in our voting laws.

"Our current Secretary of State has done an outstanding job focusing on stopping voter fraud, and has implemented reforms to help military voters. As Secretary of State, I will ensure Georgia leads the nation in giving active military voters the opportunity to cast a ballot," said MacGinnitie.

McDonnell Expands Lead in Virginia Governor's Race

/PRNewswire/ -- Two weeks before Virginia's voters cast their ballots, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell has an 8-point lead over Democratic opponent Creigh Deeds, according to a statewide poll conducted October 18-19 by Clarus Research Group.

In the latest poll, McDonnell leads Democrat Creigh Deeds 49 to 41 percent with 10 percent undecided.

An earlier Clarus Poll, taken September 10-14, showed McDonnell leading Deeds by 5 points, posting a 42-37 percent margin with 20 percent undecided.

"So far in the general election, Deeds has failed to gain sustained momentum," said Ron Faucheux, president of Clarus. "Over the past five weeks, McDonnell has expanded his lead as he's weathered attacks on his record as a social conservative."

"Since our last poll in mid-September, McDonnell has gained 7 points and Deeds has gained 4 points," said Faucheux. "While anything can happen between now and Election Day, the fundamentals favor McDonnell."

"Compared to five weeks ago, Deeds has increased his support in Northern Virginia and in the Southeast/Central part of the state. But larger gains by McDonnell more than offset those by Deeds. McDonnell's major gains came from independents statewide and voters in the Southwest/Western region," added Faucheux.

The poll found that the major motivation for Deeds' voters is their support for the Democratic Party while the primary motivation for McDonnell's supporters is because they like him personally.

Clarus Research Group is nonpartisan polling and research firm based in Washington, D.C. The poll was taken by Clarus for its own use and was not paid for or sponsored, by any client, candidate or political party committee.

The survey, which was conducted by live telephone interviewers October 18-19, 2009, had a sample of 605 Virginia voters and a margin or error of +/- 4 percent. Trial heat results were based on likely voters who said they were definitely or possibly going to vote in the November 3, 2009 elections. Voters who said they were definitely not going to vote were excluded from the sample for the trial heats.

The Clarus Poll found:

-- Despite heavy Democratic attacks on McDonnell's views on the role of
women in society, McDonnell now edges Deeds among women by one point,
45-44 percent. McDonnell posts a sizable 14-point lead among men
-- Since the mid-September poll, Deeds has gained 4 points among women
while McDonnell has gone up 5 points. Among men, Deeds gained 3 points
over the past five weeks while McDonnell jumped 8 percent.
-- McDonnell now has a strong 14-point advantage among Independent
voters, topping Deeds 50-36 percent. In the mid-September Clarus
Poll, McDonnell led Deeds among this critical swing vote group by half
his current margin, 7 points.
-- McDonnell leads Deeds in every major demographic group in the
Commonwealth except Northern Virginians, voters under 30 and African
Americans.
-- Deeds holds a massive 72-point lead among African Americans, winning
this vote 79-7 percent. He beats McDonnell 50-43 percent in Northern
Virginia and 48-41 percent among voters 18-29.
-- McDonnell leads white voters by a solid 26 points, 58-32 percent. He
also carries the Southeastern/Central part of the state 45-42 percent
and the Southwest/Western region by a thumping 28 points, 57-29
percent.
-- Among voters 65 and older, McDonnell beats Deeds by a wide 54-37
percent margin.
-- McDonnell's expanded statewide lead is largely attributable to his
increased support in the Southwest/Western part of the state, where he
nearly doubled his mid-September 15-point lead to a 28-point advantage
now.
-- Regionally, Deeds has improved his position in Northern Virginia since
the mid-September poll, going from 45 percent to 50 percent while
McDonnell has moved from 40 percent to 43 percent in the region. Deeds
has improved his support in the Southeastern/Central part of the
state, going from 36 percent to 42 percent while McDonnell has
increased his strength from 41 percent to 46 percent.
-- McDonnell leads Republicans 89-4 percent. Deeds wins Democrats 86-6
percent.
-- Thirty-seven percent of McDonnell's voters said the major reason
they're supporting him is because they like him. That was followed by
26 percent saying they're for McDonnell because they want to support
the Republicans, 10 percent who want to oppose the Democrats and 10
percent who dislike Deeds.
-- Thirty-eight percent of Deeds' voters said the major reason they're
for him is to support the Democrats. That was followed by those who
like Deeds (25 percent), those who don't like McDonnell (18 percent),
and those who want to oppose the Republicans (5 percent).
-- Fifty-one percent of voters who remain undecided in the gubernatorial
race said they don't know enough about the candidates to make a
decision and 24 percent said they have doubts about both candidates.
-- The poll also found that Republicans have the edge in the other two
statewide races. Republican Bill Bolling leads Democrat Jody Wagner
for lieutenant governor, 42-35 percent with 23 percent undecided.
Republican Ken Cuccinelli leads Democrat Steve Shannon 41-33 percent
for Attorney General with 26 percent undecided.

Marriage—under attack again‏

The family is under attack, and in Washington DC this weekend, so is the President. The GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Transgender) community is hosting an Equality March on Washington to let the President know that between solving the healthcare crisis in America, writing his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, and taking over car companies, he needs to come through on some of the promises he made to the gay lobby during the election.

In last year’s election, California, Florida and Arizona flexed their bi-partisan muscles and said “no thank you” to radically altering the oldest institution in human history—marriage. These states join Georgia and 25 other states whose constitutions ban gay marriage. The stunning electoral defeat last year looks to me like a mandate for traditional marriage to anyone with eyes—but the media and gay rights activists are not spinning it that way. The gay marriage issue has lost in every single state, and in a year of record Democratic turnout, it lost again—even in California.

Why is that? Because one of the most important issues to conservative voters is the institution of marriage. But not just white voters. Many minority voters are very traditional in this area and they tell me they resent the gay lobby “hijacking” the civil rights movement for something
besides skin color or gender. Those on the other side of this argument, made up of mostly Democrats, the gay community and special interests, have utilized any and every thing to secure civil marriage for themselves—including municipal governments, state legislatures,
executive orders, courts, and did I mention, courts. The GLBT lobby and activist groups have employed every tactic to distort ballot initiatives and spin the issue as something other than what it is. Now, they want to apply pressure to President Obama and have him deliver for them.

How will they do that? The gay rights movement that defines itself mostly on private behaviors will be marching in the streets in Washington, DC this weekend and making demands on public policy. They want to redefine marriage. They insist on teaching children in the public schools that same-sex marriage is morally equivalent to traditional marriage. I am asking Georgians of all races to come together on the issue of traditional marriage and do all we can to protect this sacred institution.

The bottom line of all of this is that the devaluing of marriage has enormous consequences. One only needs to look at the research and statistics from the Netherlands to see how the devaluation of marriage has caused more and more people not to marry. The institution of marriage, one of the oldest on the planet, is the bedrock of civilization. And for that reason, all of us need to come together to protect marriage.

All that said, those who are engaged in homosexual behavior are people—who need love and forgiveness, and who need to understand the love of God. It is hard to engage in cultural battle and still have people feel that you love and accept them. Ugly rhetoric, inappropriate jokes, and ridicule should be off limits. And most importantly, we need to do a better job in our own marriages so we don’t lose the moral authority to talk about this issue. We obviously have a lot of work to do.

Oxendine Statement on Disclosure of State Pensions

Insider Advantage writer Dick Pettys reports that according to ERS, it no longer is possible for the taxpayers of Georgia to find out a full disclosure on state pensions. This means that taxpayers cannot discover which pensioner is getting what from state government.

  Mr. Pettys reminds us that state employees, while on active duty, have their salaries easily accessible for all to see. But when a taxpayer-funded employee retires, their pension information is protected from their bosses, the taxpayers of Georgia.

Mr. Pettys reports state law was changed during the 1997 session of the Legislature, when Democrats still were in control of both chambers.

  O.C.G.A. 47-1-14(b) “…the following records maintained by a retirement system are exempted from being open to inspection by the general public:…(4) any business, financial, or personal information in the possession of such retirement system concerning a party other than such retirement system."

  I want to congratulate WGCL (TV 46) reporter Wendy Saltzman and the station’s owner, Meredith Corp, for their initial work on this matter. I also congratulate Dick Pettys for his work on this issue too.

  Let me be perfectly clear on this issue. If it is in fact true that ERS is refusing to release this information based on any interpretation of any state law, that will change in January, 2011. Should I become Governor, I will direct my legal counsel in the first days of an Oxendine Administration to meet with the heads of every Georgia retirement system and the Attorney General. 

 If I receive confirmation that these reports are true, I will direct my Administration Floor Leaders to immediately introduce legislation to reverse this outrageous policy and practice.  

Every state employee needs to understand that all of us, including me, are employees of the taxpayers of Georgia. They are our bosses and they have every right to know about our compensation. Period.

  I call on Governor Perdue, Lt. Governor Cagle, and Speaker Richardson to act prior to 2011 and move legislation early in the 2010 Session to address these allegations and provide facts to the taxpayers that they remain in charge of their state employees.

Opinion: No More Tax Benefits for Illegals!‏

Every day, in cities throughout the United States, illegal immigrants take advantage of expensive health care services paid for with taxpayer dollars. What have Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama done to prohibit this massive abuse of our financial resources?

Not a single thing. In fact, Pelosi and Obama are threatening to open up the entire health care system to every Illegal Immigrant.

It's time we fight back and make our voices heard. Nathan Deal has been leading the fight in Congress to stop illegal immigrants from getting taxpayer-funded health care benefits. In fact, he wrote the law requiring every state to verify identity and citizenship prior to enrolling anyone in Medicaid. No one has been more aggressive about ensuring precious health care funds go only to those here legally.

Just last month, Nathan offered an amendment to the Democrat government-run health care scheme that would prevent illegal immigrants from getting taxpayer-funded Medicaid benefits by simply requiring verification that an individual is a U.S. Citizen, or in this country legally. But the Democrats defeated Nathan's amendment on a mostly party-line vote.

It's time to demand citizenship verification for taxpayer-funded services. We can't wait any longer. With your help, and with one, loud voice, we can force Nancy Pelosi and liberal Democrats to close this loophole once and for all.

Opinion: Mary Norwood's Plan to Pave Over Positive Solutions for Transportation‏

Most people have probably heard that Mary Norwood has taken issue with John Oxendine and his effort to start a discussion on solutions to Georgia's transportation crisis. After John Oxendine offered via video a series of positive transportation proposals and ideas, Mary Norwood went ballistic. She could not resist attacking John Oxendine with a series of negative "robo" calls - all in an effort to get her elected as Mayor of Atlanta apparently.

Norwood has a problem being positive and being honest though. After Norwood’s public criticism, John Oxendine reached out and invited Mary Norwood to discuss in a respectful and positive manner the important issue of transportation. This was not a debate or some “trick” in order to embarrass Norwood, but a genuine effort to jumpstart a conversation between two public officials. But instead of sitting down for a constructive conversation, Mary Norwood would rather use John Oxendine to prop up her campaign in an effort to score political points. This is unfortunate.

The real truth is John Oxendine wants to save Atlanta neighborhoods. It is John Oxendine who understands that traffic and congestion impacts the quality of life in Atlanta's in-town communities. The truth is that John Oxendine wants to involve all stakeholders to find 21st century solutions for this crisis.

Mary Norwood could actually do great harm to Atlanta’s intown neighborhoods by refusing to address the crisis. This transportation crisis begs for solutions—not cheap political tricks or slogans. And if Mary Norwood somehow gets elected Mayor and decides she still wants to pit Atlanta against the rest of the metro area, we'll fight her, and then we'll beat her. Atlanta and its traffic problems can't be allowed to choke the very life of our state.

Until she is elected, she should quit trying to use the Governor's race to get some cheap publicity.

Oxendine Remarks on GA Supreme Voting Machine‏

With all due respect and appreciation for the Supreme Court of Georgia, I am deeply disappointed in the decision today to reject the challenge to touch-screen electronic voting machines.

Like many Georgians, I am concerned about the integrity of the voting process. Outside of one's faith, an argument can be made that the right to vote is the most sacred secular right a free person enjoys.

Certainly Justice George Carley is correct when he observes that no balloting system is perfect. No reasonable person would argue that premise. However, Justice Carley in citing the 2000 presidential election as an example validates the point that a verifiable backup system is needed.

With deep respect, many Georgians will suggest, and I agree, that the 2000 presidential election demonstrates the exact need for a backup paper system to establish the integrity of the voting process. Consider this: without a verifiable backup system for each individual vote, how can the American people have confidence in the electoral process?

I assure Georgia that if I have the honor to serve as Governor, our state will have a system for voting which provides a verifiable backup system to address any legitimate questions that might arise after an imperfect voting process.

I do not mean to suggest that our high court was wrong on a strictly legal basis. Rather, my point is that the state has an obligation to provide an absolute, verifiable, and trusted system for counting votes, especially when there is a problem or crisis. Many reasonable Georgians have appeared at countless meetings with state officials to express their concern. Instead of listening to the people, working with the people, and trying to find a verifiable paper-based backup system, certain state officials decided to go to court.

I promise Georgia that an Oxendine Administration will not go to court. Instead, we will work together as a state and find a common sense solution to this important issue.

Oxendine to Perdue - No Teacher Pay-cuts‏

“I want the 2,000 Georgia teachers who hold certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards to know that I am totally opposed to the proposed cuts from this Administration,” said John Oxendine, candidate for Governor. “I acknowledge and understand that in order to avoid raising taxes Georgia must address serious and substantial budget cuts, but teacher pay is off limits.”

Oxendine said he respects the work being done by Governor Perdue and like many Georgians he realizes there are no easy answers. “I do not wish to criticize the Governor and continue to offer my support in these trying times,” said Oxendine.

Oxendine said that while cuts are necessary, there are certain aspects of the budget, like teacher pay, that not only should be exempt from any cuts, but should receive annual cost of living increases.

“I call on Governor Perdue and the General Assembly to immediately reverse this policy and restore this vital funding to the very best of Georgia teachers,” said Oxendine. “The message this cut sends to those education students in our colleges and universities is demoralizing.”

Oxendine said that it is important that Georgians understand that in an Oxendine Administration there will be three areas off-limits from budget cuts: Teachers, Veterans and Law Enforcement/First responders. This last category includes the Georgia State Patrol and Georgia
National Guard.

“Georgia needs to reexamine our taxpayer funded financial commitment to social welfare programs in the budget and perhaps decide we can no longer sustain in these trying financial times,” said Oxendine.

The health care "debate" is getting out of control.

I put "debate" in quotations since the liberals in Washington don't want to debate... they demand a health care bill that will result over time in a complete government-run health "care" system.

I now put "care" in quotations because there is no way the government can provide "care" for people.

As a former chief-of-staff in the United States Senate I can tell you one thing about Washington: most politicians in Washington don't care about people, they care about influence, money, and ultimately, their own re-election.

And on health care, Obama advisers have made it clear they won't settle for a defeated bill. They are going to twist as many arms as they can in Washington until they get enough votes to pass.

Obama believes any bill passed is better than no bill at all simply to make it look like he's accomplished something.

Forget about the millions of lives at stake.

This is scary.

Make no doubt about it: The Obama and Pelosi plan will lead to rationing of health care.

I know it might sound crazy. But read closely at these statements.

-- Obama has said, "Maybe you're better off not having the surgery, but taking the pain-killer."

-- Obama has said Americans are taking too many tests, too many exams, and too many services of all types.

-- Obama's economic advisor, Peter Orszag, has called for doctors to practice medicine more "efficiently."

-- Top White House health care advisor Ezekiel Emanuel has said young adults should be given priority over senior citizens because younger people have more years of life ahead of them.

This is disgusting.. and almost hard to believe.

But think about it a little more.

Obama said that efforts to save Terri Schiavo's life, a disabled woman who was being dehydrated to death by court order, were a mistake. Obama has supported infanticide.

The pattern is clear: Obama has no respect for human life and ObamaCare will lead to rationing.

So what do we do about it? We fight back!

That's why I am running for Congress.

As the father of nine children, I have a lot at stake for the future of America. And I know you do too.

Karen Pulls Away From the Pack in Recent Poll

A poll released today by Strategic Vision shows that Karen has pulled away from the pack and has made it essentially a two-person race for Governor.

According to pollster David Johnson who conducted the survey:

“Secretary Handel increased her support to move into a solid second place... In making her gains she continues to solidify her support among female voters. In many ways, she has demonstrated a strong comeback from several months ago when Congressman Deal first entered the race. Her current numbers are the highest we have registered for her in any of our polls. Her challenge is to expand her base support of support from beyond Fulton County and female voters.”

“Congressman Deal remains in the top tier but has taken a beating over the past month falling into third place,” said Johnson. “Part of this decline of support can be attributed to the negative news stories and also concerns about his age. However this decline can be overcome and is happening early enough in the campaign that he can regain his footing, barring other negative attacks.”

Karen continues to dominate straw polls

Insider Advantage reported this week on Karen’s strong showing in straw polls across the state. Karen won in DeKalb County which is where John Oxendine is from. She won in Oglethorpe and Muscogee Counties. She also did very well in Union County, finishing second, which is in Congressman Deal’s district.

These results show that Karen has a broad base of support all across the state. Her campaign organization and grassroots support is growing as more and more Republicans join he “Bring it On” campaign.

Mike Huckabee Wins Values Voter Summit Straw Poll

Mike Huckabee has convincingly won Family Research Council's second-ever Values Voter Summit Straw Poll. Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Sarah Palin, and Mike Pence finished roughly tied for second place.

Only registered participants of the Summit who were present at the event were allowed to vote.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins released the following statement in reaction to the second ever Values Voter Summit Straw Poll:

"We were surprised that the event's turnout was more than double our expectations, clearly showing intensity among social conservatives. This was the first time potential conservative candidates could present their vision for change. We have over 1,800 registrants and over 175,000 unique online viewers."

Jones Impresses Members of Gilmer County TEA Party

Jeremy Jones, candidate for US House for Georgia’s 9th district, participated in the Gilmer County TEA party candidate forum. The forum was held on Tuesday the 15th, on the heels of the trip the group took to Washington DC to be a part of the 9/12 March on DC.

Jones energized the near capacity crowd at the ETC pavilion with his opening remarks. Rather than saying the similar, expected, Conservative phrases in line with all of the other candidates, Jones took the time to challenge the members to keep up the good work. “Don’t stop after the primary, don’t stop after the election. No matter who wins, keep the pressure on us.”

Because of the large number of candidates, the number of questions from the audience was limited. Questions that were asked touched on various topics such as illegal immigration, term limits, and the proposed audit of the Federal Reserve System.

To the question of the audit of the Federal Reserve, Jones set himself apart from the rest of the candidates when he replied, “…be careful for what you ask.” Jones insisted he was for the audit, but cautioned, “I know how bad the results of the audit will be. I will not want an audit until we have a plan in place to address the major financial meltdown that will occur when we confirm what we all assume. “

When asked to expand on his answer later, Jones said, “I agree an audit must take place, but if we do not have “plan B” in place, we will witness the dive of the Dollar to levels so low, our country could become bankrupt overnight. Everything from savings bonds to 401K’s will be worthless, unless a plan is in place first. If you knew you were going to the beach when a hurricane was approaching, you would not go unprepared. All I am saying, we cannot do the audit until we are prepared for the aftermath.”

After the meeting several attendees said Jones seemed to have the greatest knowledge of the topics and he was, “…well informed and well prepared.” Of such statements, Jones said, “It was the TEA movement that confirmed the drive to run for me. The beliefs and frustration among this group, and thousands similar across the country are exactly how I feel. I am simply saying what is from my heart.”

The event comes after a Union County picnic where Jones placed third in a straw poll, out of a field of almost 10 candidates. “The recent poll shows we have a lot of work left to do, but considering how little money we have spent, and how well we are received at all events, including the TEA party events, it is clear, this seat is not going to be bought. The people are tired of politicians shuffling jobs.”

We had a question on one of our posts from someone regarding the speakers at Tea Party events. They wanted to know if only Republicans spoke at the Tea Party protests / events (whatever you want to call them ;-). The ones I've been to had independent speakers, libertarian speakers and many who didn't claim any particular party. As a rule, the various efforts that I'm aware of want to shy away from attaching themselves to any party... In particular those involved in Glenn Beck's 9-12 project are not enamored of any political party. The meetings I've attended included Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Constitutionalists, Libertarians and a whole bunch of people who have never ever been involved in any political party or event. I've even run across a few who haven't voted in a while, but now they're engaged.

In this blog we focus on Republicans, thus we're not going to include things from other political groups. We also have Potluck Politics, State & National News, Republican News Sweep, Good Government, and numerous other blogs (and websites) which cover the range of political efforts.

We don't post ANY comments that include a link to another site or blog (even those that are hidden). The main reason we do that is that we simply don't have staff to go check out every site that's linked in comments. The comment I'm writing about here (re: speakers at tea party events) had a link and we had to be consistent so couldn't publish it. Sorry.

Graves Address Taxpayer March on Washington

State Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ranger), Republican candidate for Georgia’s 9th District, spoke to an estimated 1.5 million individuals and a nation-wide television audience at today’s Taxpayer March on Washington. Graves was one of a handful of elected officials to address the Tea Party on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

“We must take back America, the Republic. And we must push back this over reaching, over taxing, over burdensome, money hungry government that seeks to preserve itself at our liberty,” said Graves.

“We will demand from Washington…we will demand less spending, not deficit spending…we will demand a balanced-budget, not a pork-filled budget…we will demand personal responsibility, not the bureaucratic nanny…and yes, yes we will demand empower the patriots and not the politicians anymore,” said Graves.

“Here at this capitol on this high ground, we are bound together. Here together united and we will be steadfast and resolved in preserving America and her liberty. And, may today be forever known as the day that we stood together and said in one voice, ‘Don’t Tread on Me!’” added Graves.

Prior to the Tea Party, Graves led hundreds of Georgians in the March from Freedom Plaza in downtown Washington, D.C., down Pennsylvania Avenue to the U.S. Capitol building.

Graves joined other notable conservatives at the U.S. Capitol, including Georgia Congressman and Chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee Tom Price, Chairman of the House Republican Conference Mike Pence, Tennessee Congressman Marsha Blackburn and South Carolina U.S. Senator Jim DeMint.

Graves was invited to speak because of his conservative leadership in the Georgia House of Representatives and for authoring the Jobs, Opportunity and Business Success Act, HB 481 and 482, last session. The JOBS Act received national attention and was focused on helping small businesses and creating, expanding and attracting jobs through a series of tax credits, cuts, and incentives for businesses to hire Georgians.

Organizers of the Taxpayer March on Washington and Tea Party Rally said the purpose of the March was to send a “clear message that governments at all levels have been spending way too much money. The federal government is especially guilty of this, as they pile up the debt, deficits and unfunded liabilities. They are taxing, borrowing or printing money with no end in sight. This madness has to stop, and that is why we are demanding that they stop the wasteful spending and stop burdening taxpayers with more debt. This protest is about defending our liberty, and about restoring our Constitution by reducing the size and scope of the federal government,” according the group’s website.

Graves was also a speaker at the Atlanta Tea Party at the Georgia State Capitol last April.

Georgians from across the state will gather before departing for Washington to attend Saturday’s Taxpayer March on Washington and Tea Party. Jones Impresses Members of Carpet and Rug Institute in Dalton

Jeremy Jones, a Republican candidate for Georgia’s 9th congressional seat, recently participated in The Carpet and Rug Institute’s Government Issues Committee political forum. Mr. Jones, in keeping with his theme of a smaller, less powerful, federal government, said he wishes to eliminate the need for the CRI, and all PAC’s, to contribute to political campaigns if elected. “Your money will be better spent on research and development, and consumer education, not paying money to politicians to try and keep the federal government out of your business; they have no reason to be in your business in the first place.”

Mr. Jones’ message was well received, with many members saying they are now supporters of Jones and his campaign for Congress. The Republican Education Network, also in attendance, said of Jones, “Jones clearly held his own demonstrating a depth of study and accuracy, with great enthusiasm.” After the forum, Jones said, “I am continually amazed at the level of dissatisfaction of professional politicians. I am humbled by the enormous support I have received at this, and every, event. We are about to see a major change in Washington.”

Mr. Jones has been invited to speak at local TEA Parties and Right to Life organizations. His message of eliminating federal government involvement and the power of citizens to effect change in the government has been well received. “Electing career politicians to office will not insure that the voice of citizens is heard, but electing ‘a citizen to represent citizens; will guarantee the voice of the 9th district in Georgia is adequately represented in Washington D.C.”

Americans for Prosperity Applauds U.S. Congressional Candidate Tom Graves

The Georgia chapter of the grassroots free-market organization Americans for Prosperity (AFP-GA) today applauded U.S. Congressional Candidate Tom Graves (9th District) for signing the group’s “No Climate Tax Pledge.” Graves joins over 240 lawmakers on the federal, state and local levels pledging to “oppose legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in federal revenue.”

“The one thing elected officials should all be able to agree on is that global warming shouldn’t be used as an excuse to hike taxes on citizens and businesses,” said AFP-GA State Director Virginia Galloway. “We encourage all of Georgia’s elected officials and candidates for elected office to sign the pledge.”

Georgia pledge signers include: U.S. Reps. Lynn Westmoreland, Tom Price, Paul Broun, and Phil Gingrey; gubernatorial candidate John Oxendine; State Senate President Pro Tempore Eric Johnson; and State Reps. Martin Scott and Tim Bearden.

Cap-and-trade took its first step toward enactment when the U.S. House narrowly passed the Waxman-Markey energy bill, which escaped the lower chamber by a scant seven votes despite significant bipartisan opposition. However, key Democratic senators have expressed opposition to attempting to pass cap-and-trade this year. President Obama has made no secret of his support for the bill, which would be the largest tax increase in American history. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has scored the plan as an $846 billion increase in federal revenue, a burden that will be borne by taxpayers and consumers for decades to come.

“Using the guise of climate change to transfer dollars from hard-working citizens to bureaucratic big government is unacceptable,” said Galloway. “Regardless of their stance on global warming, this should be common ground for all of our elected officials at all levels of government.”

The pledge is available online at www.NoClimateTax.com. AFP does not endorse candidates. All elected officials and candidates are encouraged to sign the pledge and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to increase taxes and grow the size of government.

Graves Launches New Campaign Website

Site enhances largest presence on the web of any of the candidates

Republican State Representative Tom Graves (R-Ranger), candidate for the 9th Congressional District of Georgia, announced today that his new campaign website www.GravesForCongress.org is live on the internet and brings a fresh style of campaign website design online for the 2010 election cycle in Georgia.

“My new site allows 9th District voters to become more involved in our campaign by staying up-to-date on our activities and learn more about how I’ll represent them in Congress,” said Graves. “We’ll use this website to spread our message of protecting liberty and empowering people.”

At the site, voters are able to get campaign updates through Twitter and Tom’s Blog, view videos and pictures from the campaign trail and learn more about the four-term State Representative and his positions, as well as have access to important information regarding voting in the 2010 election.

Graves said the site will be updated frequently and voters should visit often to get current information regarding the campaign and his travels around Georgia’s 9th District.

The new website only enhances Graves’ online campaign, which is the largest among the candidates in the race. Now with the website, multiple Facebook pages and a massive email distribution list, Graves has the ability to instantly reach out to voters across the North Georgia district.

The site also incorporates a petition 9th District voters may sign calling on President Obama and Congressional leaders to make health care reforms “Patient Centered and Patient Driven”. Graves is traveling the district advocating for free market reforms that make health care choices more affordable, portable and accessible.

“These functions will be extremely helpful in getting our message out to the communities throughout the district," added Graves.

Karen Handel Calls on Obama Justice Department to Reverse Position on Non-Citizen's Voting

Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel today sent a formal request to the Obama Justice Department to reverse course on its prohibition against the state confirming U.S. citizenship for people registering to vote.

The common sense program enacted by Karen's office in 2008 used data from the Department of Driver's Services and the Social Security Administration to make sure newly registered voters were actually U.S. citizens.

Last May the Justice Department banned Georgia from conducting citizenship checks - opening the doors to organizations like ACORN to register non-citizens and encourage them to cast ballots.

Following this move, Karen launched an online petition allowing Georgians to express their opposition to the Obama Administration's move. More than 25,000 Americans signed that petition.

Today's letter is the next step in a legal process to protect Georgia's right to conduct its own elections and to ensure that all Georgia voters are actually citizens of this country.

"Citizenship verification worked in 2008, plain and simple," Karen said. "Historic numbers of people of all ethnic backgrounds voted without difficulty and no qualified voter was kept from casting a ballot."

Pro-Amnesty MALDEF denounces voter check appeal to DOJ

Not only is Karen taking on the Obama Administration to ensure that only U.S. citizens are voting in our elections, she is also fighting other liberal groups such as the ACLU and MALDEF. It was no surprise this week when MALDEF attacked Karen for her efforts.

Karen announced the appeal on Wednesday, and according to yesterday's article by the Associated Press, "the Mexican Legal Defense and Education Fund is denouncing Georgia's appeal of the Justice Department's rejection of a voter check plan." The article also cites Elise Shore, regional counsel for MALDEF, calling Karen's voting reforms a "flawed, unreliable system that creates barriers to voting."

Congress Out of Control, Spending on Luxury Jets an Outrage

Is it just me or has Congress lost its collective mind? While the rest of the country is suffering through the worst economy in a generation, they are buying themselves a fleet of new luxury private jets to fly themselves around in.

And these are the guys who chastised auto industry executives for flying to Washington on private jets? I think today's article in the Wall Street Journal summed it up nicely:

WASHINGTON -- Congress plans to spend $550 million to buy eight jets, a substantial upgrade to the fleet used by federal officials at a time when lawmakers have criticized the use of corporate jets by companies receiving taxpayer funds.The purchases will help accommodate growing travel demand by congressional officials. The planes augment a fleet of about two dozen passenger jets maintained by the Air Force for lawmakers, administration officials and military chiefs to fly on government trips in the U.S. and abroad.The congressional shopping list goes beyond what the Air Force had initially requested as part of its annual appropriations. The Pentagon sought to buy one Gulfstream V and one business-class equivalent of a Boeing 737 to replace aging planes. The Defense Department also asked to buy two additional 737s that were being leased.- The Wall Street Journal, August 7th, 2009

Obama, Healthcare, and the Real Issue

In Georgia, 95% of our companies have fewer than 50 employees. If our federal government lays a new and crushing burden of taxes and regulations on these business owners, our state's - and the nation's - economy could be ruined for many years to come.

This week, I traveled to Dublin, Statesboro, Savannah, Springfield and Atlanta. The people I met are truly concerned about the direction our country is going in. And, yes, they are mad. They are mad that Washington politicians aren't listening to their concerns.

This is a national issue but a state issue as well. States like Georgia are going to be left footing huge parts of the bill for any changes in Medicaid and we will bear the brunt of the economic damage and job losses that would sweep our state if any of the current health care plans become the law of the land.

I will be blogging on this very important issue in the near future, so stay tuned!

Congress Should Pass the FairTax Now

If Congress and the Obama Administration were serious about creating jobs, stimulus and helping the economy they would pass the Fair Tax which would help GA businesses and families immediately.

Effingham County is Handel Territory

Effingham County Commissioner Reggie Loper and his wife Sheryl hosted a meet and greet in Springfield this week. With over 40 people in attendance, and many community leaders there, I am really encouraged about our support in the county.

I told the crowd in Effingham County on Wednesday that we need to overhaul the whole tax code. The local paper picked up on that:

"We have to look at economic development incentives and investments as investments in our future, not as a cost on our bottom line," she said. Handel also called for an overhaul of the state's tax system. Three of Georgia's competitors for growth - Florida, Texas and Tennessee - have no state income tax."We're losing out on the tax side," she said. "We have an antiquated tax system in the state. We need to revamp it completely and comprehensively in partnership with the counties, the cities and the school boards."- Effingham Herald, August 6th, 2009

Tom Graves: Raising Taxes Eliminates Jobs, Not Create Them

President Obama wrong to raise taxes to pay for liberal spending

Republican State Representative Tom Graves (R-Ranger), candidate for the 9th Congressional District of Georgia, today said that the Obama Administration has it all wrong when considering raising taxes on the middle class in order to pay for their liberal agenda.

“Raising taxes kills jobs and hurts working families, especially during a recession,” said Graves. “Cutting taxes is the surest way to create jobs and put out of work Americans back on the payroll. President Obama is wrong to consider a tax increase to pay for the Democrat’s out of control spending and $1 trillion deficit.”

Sunday, President Barak Obama’s top economic advisors began laying the ground work for a tax hike on the middle class despite pledges from the President on the campaign trail not to do so. This revelation comes after the President and the Democrat-controlled Congress passed a $1 trillion energy tax and is determined to pass a $1 trillion health care bill when Congress returns from a month-long vacation.

Last week, Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Kyle Wingfield wrote that Ed Singleton, a small business owner from Ellijay, was considering selling his 11 Subway sandwiches shops because the increased cost of the recent minimum wage increase and the potential new taxes and health care mandates being discussed in Washington. Singleton said “The things that Obama’s doing are detrimental to small businesses, which are the lifeblood of this country,” said Singleton. “I can’t stay in business like that.”

“The President and Congress need to be looking for ways to reduce the tax burden on the middle class and small businesses who are already struggling,” said Graves, the four-term state representative and small businessman. “Our economy will recover by putting people back to work, through an expanded private sector, not an expanded government.”

Last session of the Georgia General Assembly Graves authored the Jobs Opportunity and Business Success Act, HB 481 and 482. The JOBS Act, which received national attention, was focused on helping small businesses by creating, expanding and attracting jobs through a series of tax credits, cuts, and incentives for businesses to hire Georgians.

Graves said if elected to Congress he will fight the Democrats tax and spend mentality.

“In Congress, I’ll fight against those in Congress who are spending the next generation into bankruptcy and the tax increases that go along with it,” said Graves. “I’ll work to eliminate wasteful spending, implement a balanced-budget and advocate for a fairer, flatter tax system so working Georgians can choose how much they pay in taxes to the Federal government.”
